About Me:
Queer Black Cinema , New York’s first and Only Black LGBTQ monthly micro-cinema series and annual international music and film festival mission is dedicated to showcasing independent narrative and documentary works by and about U.S. and international progressive Black LGBTQ filmmakers. We are a socially conscious organization that uses films to create dialogue to address homophobia, alarming health issues and many other "taboo" issues relating to the Black LGBTQ experiences. We provide an online resource to Black LGBTQ theme films and their makers as well as support LGBTQ youth of color emerging producers. In-addition, we screen and promote all people of color artist trailers and original music.

this sounds like an amazing event series. wish i was closer so i could attend. Also, Kara Keeling has a book called The Witches Flight and there's a chapter in there about Pam Grier's role in the L Word. It's quite interesting, Keeling argues that Grier's presence sort of moderates and regulates the other characters on the show, especially since Kit is haunted b Grier's past prominence in the blaxploitation films.

i do remember reading somewhere that one of the directors is a woman of color.
based on the little that i've seen, i didnt understand the craze beyond the fact that it's a television show about lesbians. this, in itself, is certainly to be celebrated, but i'm always bothered when the issues of one group are dealt with at a time. why does white lesbian exposure in the media have to come first? why isnt there an immediate connection of discrimination and disproportionality in the media between sexual orientation and race? or class for that matter? just as in the women's movement in the mid 19th century, the issues of middle class and wealthy white women became the main focus of "organized" women's liberation. they likened their plight as housewives and mothers to that of slaves (ironically, many of the founders of the women's movement were active in the slave abolition movement). but, when it came to womens' issues, their Black sisters and white working class sisters were excluded. we should look to history for triumphs as well as failures and mistakes in order to move forward with clearer purpose.

but, as you said, this is entertainment. we often set high standards of social responsibility on folk who arent presenting for that purpose at all. our enthusiasm over this program shouldnt necessarily be quailed, but in our sober moments, we need to think about what we accept as norms. think about what we demand of quality television, and make those demands clear.

gonna hit up the Brooklyn Museum for an MLK event on sunday, then hopefully up to Harlem for the BLACK season ;-)

we forgot introductions- my name is Shauntée

hey. yeah, it's me in the picture (the one in front, of course ;-)). thanks!
cool event- i have to admit that i'm a latecomer to The L word and have seen about 1 and a half episodes (honestly, i was out of the loop and disregarded it because any time i flipped there were only white women on the screen). i have some serious catchin up to do. thank the gods for netflix!
